Exclusive Interview: Thomas Newson

Thomas Newson, at the age of merely 15, joined the family business to become an internationally renowned DJ and producer. From monster hit “Flute” to his US bus tour with Hardwell, Thomas Newson is following in his father’s footsteps. Having had three tracks hit #1 spots across Beatport’s progressive house, electro house and main charts, Newson has experienced unprecedented success in what is still the first phase of his career, and established himself as one of Dance music’s brightest young stars along the way.

If you’re a fiends for progressive and electro house you probably have a playlist with ThomasNewson’s name all over it, but if you don’t have that this link is for you. The rising star sat down to share with us just how it all got started, what brings him inspiration, and what you can expect from him in the future. EPIC PRODUCTIONS: So, you’ve been DJing since you were 15. What was it that inspired you to become a DJ?

Well as a kid I grew up with dance music, as my dad has been in the industry for like 30 years now. In fact, when I was 10 he took me to a sensation White show in Amsterdam and I walked around as a little boy. So yeah it started at a really young age, but production wise I started when I was at the age of 15.

EPIC PRODUCTIONS:For all our aspiring DJ’s out there, how did you start out? Did you just buy a program one day and sit down to teach yourself or did you have a mentor?

I bought logic 9 at that time and learned everything by myself!

EPIC PRODUCTIONS:Was there ever one set that you saw that set the fire in you to become a DJ? Who was it and where?

My Dad played his own party in my hometown, that really inspired me to become a DJ

EPIC PRODUCTIONS:I know you’ve been traveling everywhere from your US Revealed bus tour with Hardwell to your recent shows in Tokyo and back home. Where are you at right now and what are you up to?

I’m in my studio right now trying to make new music.

EPIC PRODUCTIONS:What has been your favorite place in the world to perform?

I think Tokyo was one of my favorite places that I’ve traveled to. The reason for that is because Tokyo has such a different culture to where I live, so I really like the contrast with the culture of my own country.

EPIC PRODUCTIONS:What was your favorite memory from the Revealed North American bus tour?

It was with no doubt the best tour I’ve done so far! The shows were sick of course, and because you’re literally in a bus the whole day with such a close-knit group we had so much fun, which is the most important thing for me.

EPIC PRODUCTIONS:Also, how was playing at Ultra this year? I know you were pretty amped to play there.

Great! I played so much new stuff which is coming soon!

EPIC PRODUCTIONS:Who is the one person you dream to have for the vocals of one of your songs one day?

Coldplay!

EPIC PRODUCTIONS:Every producer has their own way to get the juices flowing to create something new. What do you do to get in the zone?

Ideas can pop up anywhere! When I'm on tour or walking around in the city, or having lunch in my hometown, it doesn't matter for me!

EPIC PRODUCTIONS:Lastly, do you have anything new coming out for your fans to be looking forward to? & If so, you’ve made songs in a few different subgenres now. Can you give us a hint as to what type of sound it will have?

There are so many exciting things that I'm working on right now! But two of those tracks are already scheduled for a release! There’s one coming with Magnificence, with whom I made Blackwolf & Blizzard previously, and one with Manse in the summer!
