Exclusive Interview: Prismo
This week I was fortunate enough to get in contact with an up and coming trap/bass superstar known as Prismo. For those of you who don’t know, Zack Burgett (A.K.A. Prismo) is a young producer hailing from Houston, Texas. With-in the past two years, Prismo has released music on Firepower Records, Monstercat, and several other huge labels. His innovative synth work and high energy sound design is what sets him apart from others and has gained him recognition in the EDM world. 2016 was a huge year for him but 2017, as he explains, will be even bigger. Read on to hear what he has to say.
EPIC PRODUCTIONS: So first, tell us a little about yourself and what made you get into the music scene?
Prismo: I've been interested in music since my early childhood! My father was a musician and he greatly influenced my gravitation towards music. I learned to play several instruments such as drums, guitar, bass, ukulele, and piano. As I grew with music, I began to define my sound and started releasing songs as Prismo. As soon as I recognized how my music can move people, I knew I wanted to be involved in the music scene for the rest of my life.
EPIC PRODUCTIONS: I love the name Prismo what made you choose it?
Prismo: I chose Prismo because it's short and sweet. I spent weeks thinking of a good name and one day while my little brother was drawing with "Prisma" colors, the name "Prismo" popped into my head.
EPIC PRODUCTIONS: To someone who may not know you, how would you describe your sound?
Prismo: My sound is like a somber, sweater weather type of vibe that that maintains constant energy. It's vibrant and colorful electronic music that you'd want to listen to whether you're road tripping, working out, or dancing at a festival.
EPIC PRODUCTIONS: What do you use for production? Any favorite VSTs?
Prismo: I use both FL Studio and Ableton for production (FL Studio is my preference). I also use a MIDI keyboard, launchpad, and a microphone for almost every song I produce. As far as VST software goes, I really enjoy Serum, FM8, and all of the iZoptope Ozone plugins!
EPIC PRODUCTIONS: 2016 was a huge year for you. Where do you see yourself in 2017? Any big goals/collaborations?
Prismo: 2017 will be that start of the Prismo evolution. I have several big singles lined up as well as plans for a whole new type of live Prismo set. I don't want to give away too much, but there's a lot I'm excited for in 2017!
EPIC PRODUCTIONS: Playing as many shows as you have, is there any city/venue that sticks out to you?
Prismo: There are a few cities and venues that stick out to me in particular. Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis and Soundgarden Hall in Philadelphia were two of my favorite shows because the crowds were SO involved. All of my Texas shows are always really great too. Shoutout Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Marcos, and Corpus Christi!
EPIC PRODUCTIONS: Any pre-show rituals?
Prismo: My fav pre-show ritual is to sticker-bomb and/or place a single sticker in the venue to mark my territory. It's a pretty standard thing to do, but regardless it feels good to leave my footprint.
EPIC PRODUCTIONS: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen while playing show?
Prismo: In Chicago there were all these robots with lasers and chicks shooting sparks off their clothes with power tools. It was weird but kinda great.
EPIC PRODUCTIONS: To all the DJs and Producers out there, what advice do you have to propel yourself further with-in the industry?
Prismo: My advice to other DJs and Producers: Work hard to make quality music that other people haven't heard before. Make a unique sounds that represents YOU. Being unique makes you valuable. Once you have quality material to release on a consistent basis, developing your brand and marketing yourself will come naturally, and before you know it you'll be making moves.
EPIC PRODUCTIONS: Finally, who are your top three favorite artists?
Prismo: My favorite artists change all the time, and naming all-time favorites is too difficult. But right now while looking at my top artists on Spotify, I'd have to say my current favs are Anderson .Paak, Xavier Omar, and Snakehips.
Huge thank you to Prismo for taking the time to speak with us. Be sure to check out his newest track Coexist VIP and be on the lookout for him in a city near you!
