Exclusive Interview: Super8 & Tab
Since 2005, Super8 & Tab have produced hit after hit in the trance scene. After catching the ear of Armin van Buuren, Super8 & Tab are now onto their next big venture as part of Armada Music’s Armind imprint. Fans have been all over their latest release, 'Komorebi' (which you can check out here), and more big things are on the horizon for Super8 & Tab in 2016. Read on for an exclusive interview with the dance music duo.
With ten very successful years under your belt on the Anjunabeats label, what were some of your favorite highlights?
It's been a great journey for us on Anjunabeats and there has been tons of great moments. If we have to name just a few of the highlights we would pick the release of 'Helsinki Scorchin' release, which changed the game for us 10 years ago, and of course, albums 'Empire' and 'Unified' which both have taken us around the globe.
You've known Armin for many years now, could you tell us more about your history with him?
We met Armin for the first time in early 2000 when we booked him to play in Helsinki. Ever since we have been in contact more or less whenever he's playing in Finland, we have played on his ASOT events or we just have been on the same festival lineup. Even he is super busy he always has time to catch up no matter what, and we talk about music and our personal lives.
Why was now the time to make the switch and sign on with Armada Music's Armind?
We have been talking about this for years with Armin and towards the end of last year felt like it was the right time and we had been creating tracks which were really perfect for Armind. As everyone knows we have been with Anjunabeats since practically day one so after all these years it was time to expand our music to other labels too. Armind was our first choice.
You talk about pushing the boundaries with these new tracks, while staying true to the Super8 & Tab sound. How would you describe your core sound and influences up until now, and what new directions do you see yourselves moving toward?
Our core has always been melodic and uplifting trance. We always get inspired with other genres too like techno, electro, house, 'EDM' and trying to adapt that to our own sound. It would be so much easier to open the same template and do the same thing all over again but we don't want to do that. We always start from scratch and push us to find new ways to create something new but still keeping that Super8 & Tab core sound involved.
What was the inspiration for your latest release, 'Komorebi'? Could you talk us through your creative process and how you went about making the track? We wanted to do a peak time track with a driving bassline, big emotional breakdown with nice melodies and then the drop that releases all that tension and energy. We started playing around with some chords and melody and then created bassline and drums around it.
It's an awesome track, and we're looking forward to your remix package as well. Do you have a favorite off of that? 'Komorebi' remixes are coming along nicely and there is something for pure trance fans too.
What else is on the horizon for 2016? 2016 could not have started any better for us as our remix for Above & Beyond 'Little Something’ is holding the #1 place on Beatport as we speak. We are also super excited to release the follow up to 'Komorebi' very soon in Armind. We also have plenty of new tracks waiting to be released so it's going to be an exciting year!
Any parting words for our readers here at EPIC? We wish an epic 2016 to everyone and hope to see you on the dance floor somewhere around the globe!
