Yet another Banksy identity reveal – could it be a founder of Massive Attack?
Remember when back in 2008 when we believed the mysterious graffiti artist, behind the name of Banksy, has been revealed? Robin Gunningham, a former public school student from a middle class family, was believed to be the main suspect. At least, by the word of mouth from his friends and acquaintances. However, this year, the case had some major proof which indeed might lead to Robin – including geographic profiling, that is used to catch criminals, and pinpoints locations of Banksy’s artworks to his movement around. You can even google “Robin Gunningham wiki” which leads to Banksy’s Wikipedia page. But here’s a twist…
Another journalist Craig Williams, claims that the man behind the mask is Robert '3D' Del Naja, a founder of trip-hop project Massive Attack. You might know them by the song you can hear in an opening of M.D. House TV series.
He noticed a connection between their tour dates and appearances of Banksy’s artworks. Let’s take a look at the facts.
- Banksy got his first recognition back in 90s, Massive Attack had been formed in 1988.
- Earlier in March 2003, some of Banksy’s artwork had been spotted on their tour to Australia in Melbourne, where the band played a month later in April.
- The appearance in Los Angeles with his infamous exhibition “Barely Legal”, in September 2006, and just a week later Massive Attack US tour lands them right to La-La Land.
- At least six of Banksy’s murals were reported on May 1, 2010 in San Francisco, after a 2-day performance of Massive Attack on April 25 and April 27. One week later their performance in Toronto, new graffiti rumored by Banksy were reported shortly after.
- In 2008, 14 stencils of Banksy appeared in New Orleans to bow down for third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Almost at the same time, Robert is co-writing a soundtrack for a documentary Trouble the Water, a video film based on New Orlean’s disaster.
- Del Naja also appears in Banksy's Exit Through The Gift Shop, a film directed by Banksy himself, where he talks about their friendship.
- Last, but not least, Banksy made his foreword for the book 3D and the Art of Massive Attack.
All of that is definitely makes a lot of sense. However, we can’t be one hundred percent sure. Too many coincidences? Do you believe that Banksy is just one person or a public figure? Is it art or an act of vandalism? Let us know your thoughts.
